| The Industrial Laboratory was established in 1900 under the Ministry of Agriculture and Commerce. Its name was changed the Government Chemical Industrial Research Institute, Tokyo. And then to the National Chemical Laboratory for Industry in 1972. |
| The Silk Laboratory was established in 1918 under the Ministry of Agriculture and Commerce. Its name was changed in 1937 to the Textile Research Institute, and later to the Research Institute for Polymers and Textiles under the Ministry of International Trade and Industry. |
| The Industrial Art Institute was established in 1928 under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. Its name was changed in 1952 to the Industrial Arts Institute, and to the Industrial Product Research Institute in 1969, and it was placed under the Ministry of International Trade and Industry. |
| In January 1993, groups conducting research into materials and substances in these three Institutes, all of which had moved to Tsukuba in 1979, were reorganized, and the National Institute of Materials and Chemical Research was established. |
