To develop technology for controlling the physical properties of polymers, the Department is mainly studying methods of controlling the high-dimensional structure and interface of polymers, and clarifying correlations between their structures and physical properties. Major areas of study include the creation of functional surfaces using synthetic lipids, structural control of organic ultra-thin films for optical and electronic uses, the analyses of surface forces and polymer membrane gas-transport and adsorption behavior, and the evaluation of physical properties of silicon-based and liquid crystalline polymers.
