The Department aims to develop outstanding technology for "creating things," such as functional surfaces with advanced designs, and - based on precise analysis of surface structures - conducts research related to catalysts and separation materials for high-level control of chemical reactions. Studies include highly homogenized inorganic materials synthesized by the sol-gel method and their use for selective catalytic reactions and separation materials, producing hydrogen by the catalytic decomposition of water utilizing light, converting carbon dioxide to sub-stances such as alcohol, liquid fuel from natural gas and coal, and removing harmful NOx from engine emissions.
