The Department researches the synthesis and characterization of new inorganic materials based on the control at the atomic level of structures and compositions. Such research includes: the thermal-plasma synthesis of biocompatible materials; studies on ceramic-based artificial superstructured films; those on new metal chalcogenides and oxides with peculiar crystal structures; and the CVD synthesis of thermoelectric materials. Studies on energy-related technologies are also intensively being carried out such as the dipping-pyrolysis syntheses and the fabrication of superconducting films; studies on metal hydrides for hydrogen storage and transportation; and those on solid oxide fuel cells.
