Biomimetic Membrane

Various biomimetic membranes have been developed at the Institute, including one that simulates the functions of material transport, such as material uptake or release as a result of external environmental changes or external stimuli (membrane with stimuli-responsive function), and another that displays spontaneous oscillations of membrane potential (self-oscillation membrane), simulating information acceptance and conversion functions, as observed in sensory-organ cells and neurons.

These studies are expected to contribute in the future to the development of sensors capable of signal amplification, electron devices such as non-linear resistant components, self-regulating devices for pharmaceuticals and agricultural chemicals, and artificial organs such as artificial pancreases.

Impulse is generated by the periodic change of the secondary structure of poly(amino acid) molecules, which constitute the membrane.
