Various biomimetic membranes have been developed at the Institute, including one that simulates the functions of material transport, such as material uptake or release as a result of external environmental changes or external stimuli (membrane with stimuli-responsive function), and another that displays spontaneous oscillations of membrane potential (self-oscillation membrane), simulating information acceptance and conversion functions, as observed in sensory-organ cells and neurons. These studies are expected to contribute in the future to the development of sensors capable of signal amplification, electron devices such as non-linear resistant components, self-regulating devices for pharmaceuticals and agricultural chemicals, and artificial organs such as artificial pancreases.
