The Institute studies the use of ultraviolet laser beams in photo-chemical reactions to synthesize chemicals with specific structures or to improve performance or to add functions to polymer materials. One example is the irradiation of excimer lasers, high-intensity ultraviolet pulse beams, onto the surface of a polymer film to produce a new functional film (see Upper Photo). Lower photo shows the electroless plating of nickel metal on a poly(tetrafluoroethylene) [PTFE] film. The film is placed in an atmosphere of hydrazine gas and undergoes irradiation from an ArF excimer laser beam through mask with four letter pattems to make only the exposed portions hydrophilic for electroless plating. This technique provides a new Process for preparing electronic circuit boards and may also find applications in the fields of chemistry, machinery, and medical care.
