We investigated post-dialysis changes in blood levels of minerals and trace elements in twenty patients with chronic renal failure receiving hemodialysis at this hospital. Serum samples obtained before and after a 4-hour dialysis were subjected to biochemical analysis and ICP emission spectro-metry for major minerals and trace elements. Results of biochemical analysis showed post-dialysis increases of Ca, Fe, Cu and Zn and decreases of P and Mg.
ICP emission spectrometry, on the other hand, revealed that Fe and Zn rather diminished following dialysis. ICP emission spectrometry of erythrocytes disclosed post-dialysis increases of Ca, Fe, Cu, Mg and P, and decrease of Mn.Thus there were discrepancies between the biochemical and ICP emission spectrometric analytical values for some of these inorganic minerals.
