Retention Behavior of beta-Carotene on Polar and Nonpolar Stationary Phases in Supercritical Fluid Chromatography

K. Sakaki, T. Shinbo, and M. Kawamura
[J. of Chromatographic Sci., Vol.32, pp.172-178, 1994]

The retention behavior of beta-carotene in packed-column supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) is investigated, and the retention mechanisms on polar and nonpolar stationary phases are discussed. The retention of beta-carotene on nonpolar stationary phases depends on its solubility in the mobile phase, and the mechanism is explained using the theories developed in reversed-phase liquid chromatography. The retention behavior of beta-carotene on polar stationary phases is apparently different from that on nonpolar ones; its mechanism is similar to normal-phase liquid chromatography.
