The thermal behavior of several a-alkylated quaterthiophenes is investigated. Polarizing microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry reveal that dipropylquaterthiophene exhibits a nematic liquid crystalline phase while oligothiophenes bearing longer alkyl chains have more ordered high temperature phases.
