A new type of room-temperature-cured hybrid material incorporating an alcohol soluble polyurethane resin film with tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) as a precursor of inorganic silica glass has been successfully produced. In this process, an alcohol soluble polyurethane resin was mixed with TEOS to prepare a polyurethane resin silica glass hybrid sol solution. Hybrid films have been obtained from this solution. After drying the polyurethane resin-silica glass hybrid sol solution, the condensation reaction of TEOS accompanied by the hydrolysis proceeds in atmospheric moisture. The resulting hybrid material was characterized by the stress-strain curve, the thermal gravimetric, and the dynamic mechanical behavior. As the result of the hybridization of TEOS and alcohol soluble poly-urethane resin, natural dried films of these hybrid materials exhibited useful properties of high hardness, high gloss transparency, solvent resistance, and excellent mechanical reinforcement. |
